With resumes that include various metal subgenres along with electronica, hardcore, post-punk, psychedelia and free improvisation, the members of San Antonio, Texas-based Syr bring a kaleidoscopic set of influences to bear on their first musical love: progressive metal.

The four-piece act juxtaposes punishing elements of black metal and old-school death metal with dissonant prog, eerie space rock, shifting time signatures and pulsing synth waves. Crushing and claustrophobic one moment, subdued and spacey the next, the music of Syr explores texture and dynamics to build tense, sometimes epic, soundscapes.

Fitting to the darkly surreal sonics, the band’s lyrics explore science fiction, mythology, ecological collapse and an array of dystopian futures.

Think of Syr’s music as a soundtrack for exploring a deserted space station abandoned by a long-extinct alien race — or the last thing you hear as you drift into an uncertain slumber before traveling through hyperspace.
